Nigeria has a rich culture, with distinct clothing that are worn both in daily life, and religious ceremonies. There are many distinct outfits worn for different occasions, such as marriage, or other rituals.
Folk Clothing:
The Gele: This cloth, traditionally worn around women's heads, can be wrapped in many different ways.
The Agbada: Men often wear this robe over their clothes for formal events.
The Buba: This loose fitting, long sleeved shirt with a v-shaped neckline is usually worn by women, but can be worn by men. Generally, it falls right below the waste.
The Iro: These long skirts are worn by wrapping at around the waste and tucking it in at the end.
Sokotes: These trousers are very loose, so they have a drawstring to help keep them up. They are traditionally worn in the Yoruba tribe.
Garbs: Usually worn at weddings or funerals, these exquisite gowns can be an indicator of status or wealth.
Popular Clothing:
Jeans: Like the rest of the world, Nigeria has jumped on to the jeans train. People now wear these denim pants in their daily life, most often in cities and developed areas such as Lagos.
Modern Brands: Many people in Nigeria wear modern brands that many individuals in other parts of the world wear as well. This, although possibly damaging to the traditional clothing culture in Nigeria, contributes to the development of the global economy.
Doro Olowu's Designs: Doro Olowu, a Nigerian born designer, creates clothes that are sold all around the world. Based off of traditional Nigerian clothing, these modern twists are very popular as lately African fashion has been very trendy.
