Currently, because of political unrest and civil wars in Nigeria, many people are migrating to countries in Europe, prominently the UK, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, and Spain. Migration from Sub-Saharan Africa to Spain is shown in the picture above, as migration to Spain from Africa in 2005 was a major issue. Another push factor for Nigerians is the human trafficking that takes place, specifically with women. It is believed in many places that migration to Europe is the only escape from poverty, so people pay to be smuggled there, and then work for the smuggler in order to pay back their debts. Once out of debt, many migrants find it hard to get jobs in Europe, so they then become traffickers themselves, making the human trafficking problem in Nigeria even worse. Now, with people more aware of the Human Trafficking taking place in Europe, the smugglers are forced to get clients from more rural areas, who are generally less informed and can be convinced more easily to take part in the smuggler's program.
