Nigeria has an assortment of common foods that they eat, which can be grouped into 2 categories,folk and popular. Much of the food that they consume has been produced since early farmers, and these crops are known to be very traditional. Others have been consumed only recently, and are usually popular brands that are bought world wide such as sodas.
Traditional Foods:
FuFu: This dough is made from boiled or mashed plantains, and is eaten not only in Nigeria, but in many other African countries as well. It is considered a staple item in many of these places.
Akara: Akara is a deep fried bean cake, often eaten at breakfast. It is airy and light, and is also eaten as a snack throughout the day. Made of peeled black beans and onions and assorted spices, these little cakes are a favorite of Nigerian people.
Moin-Moin: Moin-Moin is a dish made of ground brown beans mashed together, steamed in banana leaves. Moin-Moin can be enjoyed as a meal, or as a side dish.
Edikangikong: This dish is a dry, leafy vegetable soup, made from flaked pumpkin leaves known as "ugwu", and water leaves known as "gbure". This dish comes from the cross-river region of Nigeria.
Dodo: Dodo is made by deep frying diagonal cut plantains, which are then dried. This dish can be eaten as either a main of side dish.
Popular Food:
Domino's Pizza: Mainly based in Lagos, this franchise serves both traditional pizza, and pizza with a Nigerian Twist! They offer 2 pizzas with Suya Spice, a popular spice in Nigeria, and jollof rice can be added to any pizza of your choice.
Mr. Biggs: This franchise, based in Nigeria, specializes in meat pies. This chain has sold over 600 million meat pies since the chain was created.
Mama Cass: This Nigerian fast food chain has gone global, with it's first over sees branch in London. The dishes that these restaurants serve are traditional Nigerian dishes, with a bit of a modern twist. Some of the meals they serve include Nigerian Fried Rice, and Edikangkong soup with pounded yam.
